This unique E-Bike tour meanders through some of the best wine land scenery in South Africa. We cycle from Stellenbosch to Franschhoek. Meet local people and taste some of the great cuisine this region has to offer before our bus takes us back to Stellenbosch.
NB. Riders need to have intermediate mountain biking skills to do the tour and a general fitness level is required. Activity level 3/5
Distance is about 50km with 850m climb elevation
Itinerary
• Start at 9:00 from our office in Stellenbosch
• Cycle mostly jeep tracks and mountain bike trails over the Helshoogte Pass, a route used by the first Dutch and French families who settled in the Olifantshoek valley in 1688. Later known as Franschhoek.
• Enjoy fantastic views and sites along the way.
• Learn about small mission stations and local people living in the Banghoek Valley.
• Get a chance to spot Eland and Blue Wildebeest as we cycle along multiple mountain streams in the Banhoek Conservancy.
• Enjoy lunch and wine on a Franschhoek Wine estate
• Have time to explore the beautiful town of Franschhoek.
• Transport back to Stellenbosch by vehicle

There were only 2 of us booked on the tour but it still ran. Indeed there were two guides ( one of whom was a trainee) and a further person coming part of the way as a work experience as well as the driver of the support vehicle. So we had plenty of help and guidance. My wife and I had little experience of off-road cycling but are experienced commuter cyclists. I had enquired beforehand and was told we should be comfortably able to do the trip. This was very helpful. Indeed one or two sections of the off-road bits we found a little challenging but the guides gave good advice on what gears and e-bike settings to use and were very patient. We had a nice coffee stop which was quite welcome after the main uphill section. The little bit on roads near Franschoek was also well managed. Lunch and wine tasting at the vineyard was excellent and we had a smooth journey back to Stellenbosch. Overall this was a very well managed very enjoyable trip and we would certainly recommend it. - David

We are a family of four who cycle regularly in London - we are not overly sporty but healthy. The trip from Stellenbosch to Franchhoek on electric bikes was one of the highlights of our trip! Beautiful scenery and we saw things w normally would not have seen, had we stayed in the roads. Our guide and vehicle driver were brilliant. Thoughtful, informative and fun. We could not have asked for a better team. The only thing we were not pleased with was the restaurant at the end. The setting was lovely and the staff were friendly but after a good morning's cycle, we did not feel like the lunch that was on offer. It was too 'over the top', with too many wines and the food was not good. My mother joined us for lunch and we had to pay over R500 rand for her to join us. A simpler more family appropriate restaurant would have been much more fun and fitting with the day. But this did not ruin our experience as we loved the morning and would recommend it to everyone.
